Astronomer (galactic structure, interstellar gas, comets). (1900-1992). Astronomer at and, from 1945, Director of the Leiden Observatory; on the faculty of University of Leiden from 192; established observational verification of galactic rotation; one of the authors of the Oort-Lindbald theory of differential galactic rotation; initiator, with Baade, of the European Southern Observatory; general secretary of the International Astronomical Union from 1935-1948, and president from 1958-1961.
